Pictures of some of the beneficiaries.

Vishnu, 13 yrs. Orthopaedically Handicapped

Vishnu was born without the extremities of legs and hands.  A very energetic and enthusiastic child, he runs about using the artificial limbs.  To enable him to walk, the centre gave him artificial limbs for both legs..  He is a good student.  Using the hands which have no fingers he can write and draw pictures

Vishnu (6yrs.), Anandu (3yrs.), Hearing Impaired

Vishnu & Anandu are brothers.  Their parents are normal and have no disability.  By some stroke of bad luck both of them are hearing impaired.  The realisation that the second child also was deaf was a great shock to the parents.  The poverty and the disability of the children made them dejected.  The workers from MGRC did their best to console them by counseling.  The centre helped them to get hearing aids.  The children are now undergoing speech therapy at the National Institute of Speech & Hearing.

Thankayyan, 56yrs. Orthopaedically Handicapped

He was a very able-bodied daily labourer.  He had a stroke 2 years back and life became extremely miserable.  All his earnings are gone and now he is staying with his wife in the small hut seen in the picture.  The centre gave him a wheel chair and put up parallel bars to enable him to practice walking.

Aisha Beevi, 51 yrs. Orthopaedically Handicapped

Aisha Beevi’s legs were deformed by birth.  She is staying with her brother.  As nothing much could be done about the disability the Centre helped  her to start a small provision stall by providing the necessary capital.  Though the income is small it keeps her busy and she is happy that she can interact with the neighbours quite frequently.

Muhammed Basheer, 49 yrs. Visually Impaired

Basheer was born blind.  He is married and has three daughters.  When MGRC met him he was selling lottery tickets.  The centre provided capital to enable him to start a petty shop.  He is trying to make both ends meet with the income from the shop & lottery sales.

Selvi, 53 yrs. Orthopaedically Handicapped

Selvi had an accident at the age of 18.  She fell down from a bridge and was totally paralysed.  After some treatment at the hospital she was brought back to her small hut and thereafter for the last 35 years, she has been bedridden.  During this period she lost her parents and there were no body to look after her except an older female relative. She also had nowhere to go.  The old lady works as a housemaid and supports Selvi.  The centre set up a small petty shop for Selvi.  As Selvi cannot move the customers themselves take the items they want and leave the money in the box.  Though the income is very little the shop keeps Selvi happy.

Sajikumar, 22yrs. Orthopaedically Handicapped

Sajikumar is a victim of cerebral palsy.  He is incapacitated below the waist.  But the Calipers and Crutches provided by the centre has enabled him to move about.  He is also having difficulty to speak.  However with the help of the centre now he runs a small petty shop and earns his living.

Shamnad, 14yrs. Orthopaedically Handicapped

Shamnad was born with ‘spina bifida’ which makes the life of the victim miserable.  From his very early years the centre has been supporting him by providing medicine, calipers, crutches, and educational assistance.  He needs continued care.

Kunjukunju, 54yrs. Orthopaedically Handicapped

The problem started with a small wound on the right leg.  Probably due to lack of medical care infection set in and at last the leg was amputated.  Even though the family members of Kunjukunju were helpful he was very dejected when MGRC found him.  The centre provided him with crutches and gave him a goat so that he can be productively engaged.  Now he lives happily with his family.

WE bring you a few cases of persons with disability. There are many many more suffering individuals whom the centre has helped.

AnoopAnoop is 9 years old. He lives with his family. His father is a laborer. As part of its regular survey the centre found him bedridden. After a medical assessment he has been undergoing physiotherapy. If supported, he can sit in a chair. The excercises have strengthened his neck muscles. He needs a continued service.

15 year old Beena, who is mentally challenged and orthopaedically handicapped, lives with her parents and brother. She was bedridden when the centre found her. After medical assessment she too underwent physiotherapy, but unfortunately there has been no improvements in her condition. With hope in our hearts we continue physiotherapy and medicines.

Vandana, a 14 year old girl, was born with one normal leg. In the place of the other leg, she has a misshapen foot with tiny toes. A vivacious young girl, Vandana loves to dance and sing. She’d love to take music lessons too. She hops around cheerfully on one leg, but going to school was difficult. The centre provided her with a prosthetic limb.

Six year old Deepu and his eleven year old sister Deepthi, are mentally and physically challenged and have photosensitive skin. After PMR assessment the centre is providing them with proper medication for all their problems. To augment their meagre family income, the centre gave their mother a sewing machine.

Vijayakumar, who is 34 years old, lost both his legs in an accident. He lives with his aged mother. Medical assessment showed that he had 80% disability and the centre helped him to get a certificate to that effect. The MGRC trained him to make envelopes and also set up a petty shop for him. Despite his handicap, Vijayakuamr, is a happy young man. He has an independent source of income to support his mother and himself.

14 year old Rajesh’s father abandoned his family. His mother works as a housemaid to support him and his sister. Scalded when he was a little child, he lost all sensation in one leg. The centre provided him with calipers to help increase his mobility. Rajesh now attends regular school.

Gopakumar aged 28, is mentally challenged and visually impaired. He tends to lose his temper at times. He is totally dependent on others for all his needs to and lives on a meager pension.

Vijayakumari(Blind) of Aruvikkara, making incense sticksHis sister Vijayakumari who is 38 is visually impaired. Out of sheer fright she never ventured out of the house and her world was confined to one room in her house she shared with her family. The centre imparted mobility training and taught her to make incense sticks. Being economically independent, her world is much brighter today.

Sebastian has cerebral palsy since childhood. The centre found him in 1993, as part of a survey and took him to the medical college. However, surgery did not prove helpful in his case. The mothers’ meager salary as a housemaid has to support him and his 2 younger brothers. The centre provides the continuous medication Sebastian needs.

Little Renjith was born with a congenital heart problem. A stroke at the age of 1 ˝ left him partially paralyzed without use of his one hand and leg. His father earns a mere pittance as a labourer. At present, the centre provides Renjith with the continuous medication he needs, but the child needs heart surgery.

At 30 Leelamma was afflicted by Rheumatoid Arthritis. Due to lack of proper treatment and adequate care, all her joints went stiff and she became totally immobile. What her husband earns as a labourer is hardly sufficient to make ends meet. The centre provided her a loan, on very easy terms and helped her set up a petty shop. The centre's help in rehabilitating her has brought some happiness in her life.
